April 8, 2026 | Lorain, Ohio — The Lorain Titans hosted Mentor High School for a girls and boys dual meet against the Cardinals, and while the final score favored Mentor, the Titans showed fight across nearly every event. Lorain picked up event wins in the girls 200m, girls 400m, girls 4×100 and 4×200 relays, boys long jump, boys 200m, boys 4×100 relay, and the girls 300m hurdles — and produced standout performances in the throws, sprints, hurdles, and distance events throughout the afternoon. With personal bests and season-best performances scattered across the roster, Lorain leaves this meet with momentum.
Sprints
Junior Viviana Chavez was Lorain's most dominant force on the girls' side, sweeping both the 400m and 200m on the day. Chavez won the 400m in 1:05.74 — the fastest time in Heat 1 — and claimed first place in the 200m as well, continuing her emergence as one of the most complete sprinters in the region. She also served as an anchor leg in relay events throughout the meet. Fresh off a personal best of 1:04.78 in the 400m at the Avon Lake Invitational just days earlier, Chavez is peaking at exactly the right time.
Senior Autumn Roberts backed up her standout invitational performance with another strong dual meet showing. Roberts swept the top two spots alongside Chavez in the girls 200m and contributed to relay squads across the afternoon. Her combination of sprint speed and hurdles ability makes her one of Lorain's most versatile competitors.
In the 100m dash, Janyzha Javey (MHS) took the overall fastest time at 13.24, but Lorain's Ava Miller (13.95) finished second in Heat 3, and Samara Nixon (14.45) won Heat 5 outright for Lorain. Toni Howard placed third in Heat 4 (16.14) and Jada Hood competed in Heat 2. Keilianny Figueroa rounded out Lorain's 100m effort with a 6th-place finish in Heat 3 (17.64).
Hurdles
Junior J'Me Hood had a strong dual meet, finishing second the girls 100m hurdles in 17.52 — her fastest time of the early season following an old personal best of 18.28 at the Avon Lake Invitational — and then turning around to finish 3rd the girls 300m hurdles in 55.24, the fastest time in the field. That victory in the 300m, combined with her runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles, gave Lorain eight crucial points from the hurdles events alone.
Autumn Roberts picked up five more points for the Titans by finishing first in the 300m hurdles in 54.21, making it a 1-3 Lorain sweep of that event. Elyanna Arkel also competed in the 300m hurdles (Heat 2), finishing 4th overall in 57.30 and adding to Lorain's depth in the event. Sanija King rounded out the girls hurdles effort with a finish in the 300m (1:02.49).
Field Events
In the long jump, Ava Miller claimed first place overall with a mark of 15'2", continuing a strong spring season that included a 14'5" season best at Avon Lake. Miller's consistency and competitiveness in the pit has made her one of Lorain's most reliable field event contributors.
Janelle Bonty and Karlee Patterson delivered a highlight moment in the high jump, both clearing 4'2" to share third place — a performance that earned Lorain a point and underscored the team's depth in the vertical jumps. Samara Nixon and Ava Miller also cleared 4'2" on the day.
Senior Brajhia Phillips had one of the most complete field event performances on either squad, placing second in the shot put at 33'6" and second in the discus at 100'9". Coming off a 33'8.25" shot put season best at Avon Lake, Phillips is rounding into championship form. Her six combined points from the throws were among the most valuable contributions of the day for Lorain.
India Davis also competed in the throws, and Naomi Chavez contributed in both shot put and discus. Jazzylina Hamilton-Holt rounded out the discus entries for the Titans.
Distance
In the 800m, Bee Ruic pushed all the way to third place overall in 2:57.61, crossing behind Mentor's top two but earning a crucial point for the Titans. Abby Palazzola and Mel Verdin also competed in the 800m, with Palazzola finishing 4th (3:01.02) and Verdin 5th (3:01.89). Lara Wimmer, Natalia Sanchez, and Karianys Melendez also ran the 800m.
The distance squad was nearly shut out in the 1600m and 3200m as Mentor swept both events, but Lara Wimmer (7:14.36 in the 1600m) and Natalia Sanchez both finished the 1600m race. The 3200m was a Mentor clean sweep with no Lorain entries finishing in the points.
Girls Relays
Lorain's relay teams delivered some of the most electric moments of the day. The Girls 4×100 squad — Janelle Butler, Viviana Chavez, J'Me Hood, and Autumn Roberts — claimed first place in 51.92, just days after posting a season best of 55.43 at Avon Lake. The improvement of nearly four seconds in one week is a testament to how sharp this group is becoming.
The Girls 4×200 squad — Butler, Chavez, Hood, and Roberts — also took first place in 1:53.27, following up a season best of 1:53.57 at Avon Lake with another fast time. Back-to-back first places in the sprint relays represented ten of Lorain's most important team points on the girls' side.
The Girls 4×400 squad — Chapman, A. Arkel, S. Riordan, and J. Echols — ran to second place in 4:42.74. The Girls 4×800 squad — Palazzola, Ruic, Verdin, and Wimmer — finished second in 12:10.02. LHS Girls B in the 4×400 (Patterson / Hood / E. Arkel / Butler / Bonty) competed as well, finishing fifth overall in 5:46.02.
BOYS HIGHLIGHTS
Sprints
The boys sprint group turned in Lorain's most dominant performance of the dual meet, sweeping the top three places in the 200m dash. Daniels led the way in 21.74 — the fastest time in the field — followed by Moore in 22.21 and Tinsley in 22.84. The sweep was worth nine points and erased any doubt that Lorain owns the top of the boys sprint rankings in this matchup. Tinsley (23.17 at Avon Lake just days earlier) and Moore (a 52.87 400m PB at Avon Lake) continue to look better with every meet.
In the 100m dash, Anthony Piazza (MHS) had the fastest overall time at 10.58, but Lorain's Daniels finished second across all heats at 11.05 — the third-fastest time in the field — earning three points for Lorain. Miller (11.27) and Jones (12.24) also ran the 100m for the Titans. Booker and Loppe competed in the 100m as well, adding depth to Lorain's sprint program.
In the 400m, Valentin earned second place overall in 53.86, collecting three points for Lorain behind Mentor's Michael Maynard (53.21). Kirksey and Booker also competed in the 400m. The Lorain 400m group collectively shows promise as the season progresses.
Hurdles
Spraggins had arguably the most complete hurdles performance of any Lorain athlete on the boys' side, winning the 110m hurdles in 16.70 to give Lorain five points and then turning around to place second in the 300m hurdles in 44.00 for three more. That eight-point contribution across two hurdles events was critical for the Titans' team total. Coming off a 10th-place finish (45.28 PB) in the 300m hurdles at the Avon Lake Invitational, Spraggins has taken his game up a level.
Corbin placed third in the 110m hurdles (18.59), adding another point to Lorain's total. Tidmore (20.23) and Paddy Coyne also competed in the 300m hurdles for the Titans.
Field Events
Moore electrified the field events with a winning long jump at 22'7" — an outstanding mark that is among the best in the region this spring. The win gave Lorain five points, and Tinsley backed him up in third place at 20'11" for one more point, completing a 1-3 Lorain sweep of the event scoring. Moore's 20'5.75" at Avon Lake just days earlier was already a highlight; his 22'7" here represents a significant leap forward.
In the high jump, Miller from Lorain finished second at 5'10" and Moore took third at 5'8", earning Lorain four combined points. Jaden (5'0") and Melo also competed in the high jump for Lorain.
Senior Ammons represented Lorain in both the shot put and discus. In the shot put he reached 35'5" (a personal best at Avon Lake this week), and in the discus he threw 105'1" — both strong marks for the senior as he finalizes his prep season. McIntosh, Dower, and Miller also threw for Lorain in the shot put and discus.
Distance
The boys distance crew competed hard against a deep Mentor squad. Sanchez, Ruiz, Rodriguez, DeWitt, Eskridge, Kidd, Gil, Valentin, and Bednarik all ran the 800m for Lorain, with Sanchez leading the group home in 2:32.17 and Eskridge turning in a season best in his events. Rivera and Fraizer competed in the 1600m, and several Lorain athletes ran the 3200m as Mentor swept the distance events.
The boys distance crew showed depth throughout; coming off a 9th-place 4×800m finish (9:22.23) at Avon Lake with Eskridge, Kidd, DeWitt, and Rivera, the group is building into a cohesive unit as the season progresses.
Boys Relays
Lorain's boys relay performance was highlighted by a first-place finish in the 4×100 relay — Jones, Miller, Tinsley, and Moore — crossing the line in 43.42 to claim five points. The quartet that swept the top three in the 200m proved just as dominant as a relay unit, and that time will be one to build on.
The 4×200 relay squad — Ammons, Corbin, Cannon, and Ford — placed second in 1:36.67, matching the quality of their 4th-place SB effort of 1:31.98 at Avon Lake. The LHS Boys B 4×200 squad also competed. In the 4×400, LHS Boys A (Eskridge / Kidd / Rivera / DeWitt) placed fifth in 3:57.61, and LHS Boys B (Clarke / Bednarik / Rodriguez / Ruiz) placed sixth. Multiple squads ran the 4×800, led by LHS Boys A in 9:43.42.
The Lorain Titans conclude this dual meet with eighty-six points and a roster full of athletes who continue to improve week over week. First-place finishes in seven events — led by Chavez and Moore on their respective sides, and highlighted by Lorain's relay dominance — give the program concrete reasons for optimism as the schedule intensifies. The depth shown across hurdles, sprints, throws, and jumps suggests the Titans are building toward their best performances of the spring.
Final Score: Mentor 170, Lorain 86
