Norwalk, Ohio — April 23, 2026 — One day after the varsity Titans swept a dual meet against Cleveland Heights, Lorain's JV program made the short trip to Norwalk and delivered a performance of their own. When the final marks were tallied, the boys finished a narrow third with 124 points — just 1.5 points behind second-place Ashland — while the girls tied for third at 94.5 points in a competitive six-team field. Across both squads, Lorain athletes combined for multiple event titles and a long list of personal bests that signal plenty of growth heading into the back half of the season.
The Headliner
If there was one name that defined Lorain's day at Norwalk, it was Janelle Butler. The freshman did not just compete — she dominated. Butler swept the 200 meters with a personal best of 28.1 to claim first place outright, then backed it up with a runner-up finish in the 400 meters, clocking a personal best 1:08.6. Her ability to compete at a high level across multiple events in a single meet is a hallmark of a special talent, and Butler announced herself as one of the most promising young athletes in the Lorain program.
Boys Highlights
The boys gave themselves every chance to unseat Ashland for second place, piling up victories across multiple disciplines. Carmelo Gonzalez set the tone in the sprints, winning the 200 meters in a personal best 24.5 to give Lorain its first individual boys title of the day. Jahzier Cannon followed closely, finishing third in the 200 in 24.9 PR before going on to claim first in the long jump with a personal best leap of 19 feet, 3.25 inches — the longest jump of the meet. Cannon also anchored the winning 4x200 relay squad alongside Jamirius Lane, Joel Kirksey III, and Carmelo Gonzalez, which crossed the line in 1:39.6 to take the event title.
Jaden Mosley added another boys championship, clearing 5'6" on a tiebreaker to win the high jump and set a personal best in the process. In the relays, the 4x800 squad of Jeuann Sanchez, Jayden Fraizer, Justin Clark, and Pablo Rodriguez won going away in 10:08.9, and the 4x400 team of Raul Valentin, Jeremiah King, Joel Kirksey III, and Maurice Loppe pushed hard for second in 4:02.6.
In the distance events, Pablo Rodriguez turned in a standout 1600 meter run, finishing third in a personal best 5:52.0, while Dane Bednarik ran personal bests in both the 1600 (6:07.0, 5th) and the 3200 (14:01.0, 6th). Brayden Melendez continued his development in the hurdles, posting personal bests in both the 110 meter hurdles (20.4, 5th) and the 300 meter hurdles (49.4, 3rd).
Girls Highlights
Beyond Butler's dominant double, the Lorain girls produced points in nearly every event on the card. The 4x100 relay squad of Jada Hood, Karlee Patterson, Niya Chapman, and Janelle Butler opened the day with a first-place finish in 54.9, setting the tone early. The 4x200 team of Patterson, Hood, Butler, and Elyanna Arkel followed with a runner-up time of 2:00.3 to keep the momentum rolling.
Niya Chapman was quietly one of Lorain's most productive athletes on the day, setting personal bests in both the 100 meters (14.38a, 7th) and 200 meters (31.1, 8th) while contributing in the 4x100M relay wins. Elyanna Arkel scored in three events, posting a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles (20.2, 5th) and competing in the 300 meter hurdles and high jump as well.
In the field, India Davis threw a solid 26 feet, 0.5 inches to finish second in the shot put, while Jayla King set a personal best of 20 feet, 7 inches for 13th. Janelle Bonty added a personal best long jump of 12 feet, 5 inches for fourth, and Calley Hughes set a personal best of 10 feet, 3 inches in the same event.
The distance crew also contributed meaningful points. Lara Wimmer set personal bests in both the 800 (3:09.4, 5th) and 1600 (6:52.0, 4th), and Natalia Sanchez placed third in the 3200 (16:33.0) while also running the 1600. Karianys Melendez rounded out the distance scoring with a personal best 3:31.7 in the 800.
Looking Ahead
With championship season approaching, Wednesday's performances at Norwalk offered an encouraging glimpse of what Lorain's JV corps is capable of. The boys came within striking distance of a runner-up finish against a strong field, and the girls matched Norwalk point for point in the final tally. For a group still developing, the trajectory is pointing in the right direction.
The Titans Varsity teams will be back in action tomorrow at Huron (boys) and the Comet Realys (girls) on Saturday.
